Elafonissi Beach is a must do, when travelling to Crete. It is the islands most beautiful beach. The beach has a very special pink colour, and the water is beautiful and totally clear. The beach is perfect with children, the water is calm and shallow.
The drive to Elafonissi Beach can be a bit challanging on narrrow roads through the mountains, but it is scenic and the views are spetacular. From the area of Chania expect 1-1,5 hours drive. There are small villages and restaurants on the road to Elafonissi Beach, so make a stop for lunch or dinner during the drive.
Be aware that Elafonissi Beach can be very crowded. We once went in July, and it was extremely crowded being a popular daytrip for all the tourists staying around Chania.
There is no shade on the beach beyond the beach parasols, that you pay for together with the beach loungers. There is a small risk, that all the beach parasols are ocupied, so consider bringing your own, if shade is a must. Or be there early and beat the crowds.
There are toilet facilities on the beach, but expect a queue.
Brin along your snorkling gear, because there are some – not a lot – but some colored fish to explore.
It is possible to buy cold drinks and food on the beach. But the food is not worth buying and there can be a very long queue to buy drinks. Consider to bring your own.
