Our final stop was the Gili Islands. The islands are just north of Lombok. There are 3 small islands; Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan. Gili Air is said to be the most local island of the three, Meno is more deserted and Trawangan is the bigger island and more populated island with more bars and restaurants.
We chose Gili Air because I had always dreamt about snorkeling with turtles and chances of turtles are higher at Gili Air. We took the fast boat from Padang Bai.
We stayed in simple huts a few meters from the beach. The hotel loaned us snorkeling equipment and we took turns snorkeling in the crystal clear and calm water. I was in first and I searched and searched for turtles without luck, but suddenly out of the blue there were two. They were not massive in size but it was an extraordinary sight being able to swim side by side in shallow water with two turtles. I was overwhelmed and extremely happy about my luck. Time would show that it was not so much luck. Gili Air is a turtle paradise and you will find turtles in shallow water just offshore – patience is the keyword .
Gili Air is really simple. Again bring all you need and cannot live without for your children. Small kiosks can be found as well as restaurants. We saw no big hotels, only small bungalows and huts. There are restaurants at the beach serving Mexican, italien and indian food. The food is not fancy and after a few days you have tried all the restaurants. The place is so cozy and it is great eating with your bare toes in the sand watching the sunset.
Gili Air is perfect with children. The water at the beaches is calm and crystal clear. The huts have aircon. You can go there by fast boat. Only thing to consider is you have to bring everything for your children such as diapers, food, sunscreen etc. But do it – It is truly paradise!Share on Facebook
