Review: Sugar Beach Resort with kids
Most tourists in Mauritius stay in luxery resorts. We did not have the budget to stay in luxery resorts for 8 weeks but we decided to try one of the many 5 star hotels for a couple of days. Using Hotwire we found a great last minute deal on a 5 star hotel. Booking hotels with Hotwire, you do not know which exact hotel, you are going to book. You choose number of stars and a region. We chose 5 stars and a hotel on the westside of Mauritius. We got Sugar Beach Resort in Wolmar – a little piece of heaven.
Sugar Beach Resort is located in Wolmar south of Flic en Flac. We arrived in our tiny dented rental car stuffed with all our luggage wearing shorts and flip flops. It was not an elegant arrival compared to the other tourist arriving on the same time with their Louis Vuitton travelbags and high heels.
Sugar Beach Resort says on their website, that it is kids friendly, but I had my doubts when we first arrived. It was actually true, the resort is really kids friendly. The hotel is divided into zones. There are an adults only zone with an adults only pool. At first I found it snobbish, but during our stay I was really pleased about the adults zone. Because being in the non adults zone with our kids, we knew that all the other adults could just go to the adults zone, if they wanted a zone without kids. So you did not feel guilty when the kids were a little noisy in the pool or running around in the many green areas.
The beach was perfect for kids. The sand is without corals and the water is shallow. The resort is huge and offers plenty of free activities including kayaks, sailboats, petanque and a kidsclub with a great playground. Our kids loved it!
We stayed in a tiny but very nice hotelroom sleeping 4 in a row and I have to admit that it was cramped. I longed for the apartment we had left behind in Bain Boeff. But the sorroundings were extraordinay beautiful and I would definitely recommend the hotel to families with kids. I do not think I have ever stayed in a resort so beautiful. We did it the budget-way, meaning we had only booked the stay with breakfast, so we emptied the minibar and filled it with food from the local supermarket for lunch. In the evenings we drove to Flic en Flac and had great cheap dinner on one of the few local restaurants on the coast road.
After a few days in luxery we were had to get back to reality and being on a travel budget. But we enjoyed every minute of it 🙂
